One of the most important aspects of teaching is to make sure each student is able to reach the best of his or her ability. This may mean making a accommodation or modification on the project goal, time, material, theme, assessment, etc. Being fair is does not mean to treat all children equally, it means making sure students are getting the tools they need to reach the standards.

Differenciation

I love to teach students about contemporary and public art. While teaching in Webster City, students designed murals for buildings in their hometown. They picked a specific building, and then created a drawing on paper to conceptualize their idea. From there, students took a photo of their artwork and made it come to life on their building with the Adobe app on their iPad. Some of these designs were presented to the city council for their feedback by students.

Student Interest

During Fall of 2012, I had the opportunity to co-lead the art club at the House of Hope, a transitional housing program for homeless women and children in Waterloo. I worked in developing lessons that met the developmental needs, backgrounds, and interests in the middle school and high school students who lived at the house. I met the students weekly for six weeks to lead the club and work on the projects. Our final project was a collaborative mural piece of a tree to fit the house's moto: "Watch us Grow".
