Standard 6

Demonstrates competence in classroom management.

An art classroom is an exciting place; it is visually simulating and there is an anticipation of creating artwork. I have found that it is essential to have high expectations in student procedures. From example, at the middle school level, I have been giving students a daily sketchbook assignment that is to be completed in the first 2-3 minutes of class, as I am taking attendance. Students look forward to their sketchbook assignment.

Routines and Procedures

When students are doing the right thing, they want to hear it. Bringing attention to positive behavior in the classroom lets students know what you expect to see. This makes the classroom a more inviting place to learn in. Simple announcements like, "I love the way how you all are working quietly and efficiently", can be a great reminder of the high expectations in my art classroom.

Positive Reinforcement

Students need to feel safe in a classroom. This feeling of safety can come from a organized classroom, safety procedures, and habits of cleanliness. Starting this behavior at the beginning of the lesson and periodically reminding them throughout will encourage students to be responsible. While students are making artwork, I routinely reminded them of safety procedures.
