Uses a variety of methods to monitor student learning.

Rubrics are essential with art projects because it lets students know what you expect of them. Art, by nature, is challenging to grade because of it subjectivity; rubrics can solve this for the teacher. This is an example of a standard-based assessment that I have used.

This worksheet was given to students during a group project as a guide to help them gain interest in facial proportions. Students were given a measuring tape and a partner, so they could measure each other's faces and figure out the proportions. After the worksheet was complete, we had a large group discussion. From this discussion, I was able to see if students understood the mathematical proportions to the face.

Students should reflect upon each piece of artwork to give meaning to it. A large class critique is one way to reflect, but sometimes it isn't the best option. Journaling, gallery walks, and self / peer review sheets are all options for student reflection upon learning and meaning. After the completed project, students were partnered up and given sheets to give written feedback to a peer and reflect upon the successes of their own work.
