During the spring of 2019, I learned from some of the best art educators and artists around the country at the National Art Education Association Convention in Boston, MA. This convention was inspiring because I was able to understand the impact that art can have on education at the national level. During the convention I attended presentations on management strategies, mindfulness inclusion in the classroom, and creating artwork in the classroom that impacts the community.

In the summer of 2016, I attended the AVID Summer Institute in Sacramento. While there, my sessions focused on creating lessons that are culturally conscious. In the school year that followed the conference, my teaching style became more student focused. I used the Cornell Notes in my classroom, as well as the focus on WICOR.

I attended the Youth Art Month event in the historical building in Des Moines in 2012. Two hundred students from around the state were recognized for their work. At the event, I volunteered to teach a small project at a booth for the student artists. At the booth we made optical allusion magic wands to go along with the theme of that year.

During the 2017-2018 school year, Webster City Community Schools hosted John Seidlitz to share his experience teaching to English Language Learners in Texas. He developed a system in seven steps that allowed all students to become more proficient in their language skills. He emphasized that these strategies are important to use in any classroom as it creates a better learning climate for all students.
